The UAE’s new traffic law is named Federal Decree-Law No. 14 of 2024. It will come into effect next year. Key Traffic Signs for Right of Way
Familiarity with common traffic signs is crucial for all drivers in the UAE:
- Stop Sign: A stop sign mandates a full stop at junctions. It is followed by a careful check for oncoming traffic. It explains that drivers should proceed only when the road is clear.
- Yield Sign: The upside-down triangle with a red border indicates a yield. In certain areas, additional signs may specify that drivers must give way to pedestrians or cyclists.
- No Entry Sign: A red circular sign with a white line in the center signifies that entry is not allowed.
When There Are No Traffic Signs: Article 6 on ‘Traffic Priority’
The new law outlines specific rules for scenarios where no traffic signs are visible:
- Traffic Police Direction: If a traffic officer is present, their instructions take precedence over any other rules or signs. Drivers must follow their guidance on when to stop, proceed, or yield.
- Intersections and Junctions: At intersections without signage, vehicles coming from the main road generally have priority. If both roads are of equal significance, vehicles approaching from the left have the right of way.
- Roundabouts: When approaching a roundabout, vehicles already coming from the left, have the right of way.
Priority of Emergency and Official Vehicles
The decree outlines the priority order for emergency and official vehicles. It helps to ensure that these vital services can function effectively:
1. Official Processions: Official motorcades have the highest priority.
2. Civil Defence and Emergency Vehicles: Ambulances, fire trucks, and vehicles transporting patients or the wounded receive priority while on duty.
3. Military and Police Vehicles: Military convoys and police vehicles using sirens and lights should be given priority at all times.
4. Essential Service Vehicles: Vehicles performing vital services, as designated by the Minister of Interior, also have priority on the road.
Importance of Adhering to Traffic Priorities
The UAE government emphasizes that traffic rules are part of broader road safety measures. These rules will help to reduce accidents and enhance the efficiency of traffic flow. Hamad Al Shamsi, spokesperson for the UAE’s Traffic Safety Committee, remarked, “With the UAE’s growing urban infrastructure, clearly defined rules will reduce road incidents. These rules will improve driver confidence, and ensure the safety of all road users.”
