UAE is in a constant struggle to enhance digital skills among the youth. The Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC) has rolled out two initiatives to improve coding and programming education in schools in Abu Dhabi. These initiatives align with the inaugural International Day of Coding. They are designed to equip students with vital skills needed to thrive in the digital age.

ATRC is incorporating ongoing teacher training programs within schools. They want to ensure that educators are well-prepared to teach advanced coding concepts and innovative programming techniques. This new initiative provides schools with state-of-the-art educational tools. It will enhance the learning experience and promote a technical approach to STEM subjects.

ImagiCharm for Young Coders

A standout feature of the initiative is the launch of ImagiCharm. It is an interactive wearable device that offers a fun introduction to coding. This initiative has been already implemented in 22 schools. ImagiCharm aims to spark creativity while familiarizing students with Python. It is a fundamental programming language. In the 2024-25 academic year, 40 teachers will guide around 1,000 students in learning Python coding. ATRC has plans to further expand the program. It is targeting engagement with up to 3,000 students in the coming years.

Gamified Learning Through Hour of Code

Additionally, ATRC is introducing Hour of Code. It is a gamified learning experience that utilizes the popular game Minecraft as a teaching platform. It has started in partnership with public and private schools in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. This program will introduce over 1,000 students in grades 6 through 12 to Python programming. It not only makes coding more accessible but also encourages problem-solving and creativity in a fun and engaging virtual setting. Furthermore, more than 15 teachers from the UAE are currently undergoing training.
