UAE Cracks Down on Jaywalking: Heavier Fines, Jail Time, and Liability for High-Speed Road Crossings

The UAE has made important updates to its traffic laws. The government aims to improve pedestrian safety, especially concerning jaywalking. The Federal Decree-Law No. 14 of 2024 has been introduced for additional safety.

There are strict penalties for crossing roads outside of designated areas. Previously, jaywalkers were fined Dh400 for not using pedestrian crossings. Now, those who cross in high-speed zones or engage in other risky behaviors will face increased fines and jail time.

The revised law is particularly tough on jaywalking in special areas. The law is strict in areas where speed limits exceed 80 km/h. There is a likelihood of accidents on roads having speedy traffic. In these situations, jaywalkers could be held both civilly and criminally liable.

Such strictness aims to lower the number of pedestrian-related accidents. These laws enable pedestrians to use designated crossings. Residents, students, and travelers are bound to follow these traffic regulations.

These changes are part of the UAE’s ongoing commitment to enhancing road safety. A mix of educational initiatives and stricter legal measures are followed for added safety. Authorities are also planning to develop more pedestrian-friendly infrastructure in cities.

It will include additional footbridges, designated crossings, and improved signage to help pedestrians cross safely. This initiative is part of a larger national strategy. It aims to make UAE roads safer for everyone. It will minimize preventable accidents due to awareness.
