Kuwait is preparing to roll out an AI-driven camera system designed to automatically identify traffic violations. It focuses on the use of mobile phones while driving, not wearing seat belts, and reckless driving. The General Traffic Department revealed this plan as part of Kuwait’s efforts to enhance road safety.
It will further reduce the disturbingly high number of traffic accidents in the country. The AI camera system currently sees about 300 incidents on a daily basis. According to Maj. Gen. Yousef Al Khadda, Assistant Undersecretary for Traffic, distractions from mobile phones and speeding make up 90% of accidents.
The new AI system will enforce tougher penalties under Kuwait’s updated traffic law. This law seeks to modernize regulations that date back to 1976. Fines will see a significant increase. Drivers will be caught using mobile phones by facing a KD75 (around AED 900) penalty. There is a jump from KD5.
Not wearing a seatbelt will result in a KD30 fine, tripling the previous amount. Reckless driving fines will rise to KD150. The government aims for these adjustments to prevent road accidents. The AI camera system improves the safety of Kuwait’s 4.9 million residents.
Additionally, the law will impose new limitations on expatriates. It will permit them to own only one vehicle under the proposed legislation. This measure is part of Kuwait’s broader strategy to alleviate traffic congestion. It will help them to tackle the severe impact of road accidents on the nation. Traffic accidents rank as the second leading cause of death in Kuwait. The AI cameras will help to improve road safety.
Kuwait has embraced cutting-edge technology through artificial intelligence. The officials are hopeful that the camera system will help create a safer driving atmosphere. It will help in effectively identifying and preventing risky behaviors. This initiative reflects Kuwait’s dedication to utilizing modern solutions.
