The UAE has introduced Federal Decree-Law No. 14 of 2024, which significantly updates traffic regulations, particularly targeting driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs. Set to take effect on March 29, 2025, this law aims to enhance road safety and decrease accidents caused by impaired driving through strict penalties.
Under the new law, individuals found driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol or narcotics will face substantial fines, lengthy prison sentences, and the suspension or revocation of their driver’s licenses. These tough penalties are intended to deter dangerous driving behaviors that have led to many fatal accidents in the country.
First-time offenders will incur fines, while repeat offenders may face more severe consequences, including imprisonment and extended suspension of their driving privileges. Those caught driving under the influence of narcotics will encounter even harsher penalties, reflecting the serious risks to public safety associated with illegal substance use.
Additionally, the law provides for rehabilitation options, allowing offenders to participate in programs aimed at addressing substance abuse. This approach aligns with the UAE’s broader strategy to combine enforcement with rehabilitation opportunities, particularly for narcotics-related offenses.
Authorities have stressed that the law’s purpose is not only to penalize offenders but also to prevent impaired driving by raising awareness and promoting responsible road behavior.
