Doctors Warn UAE Residents: Consult Before Taking Magnesium Supplements

Health experts are cautioning UAE residents against taking magnesium supplements without proper medical guidance, as it may lead to serious health issues like heart problems and breathing difficulties.

The use of magnesium supplements has surged in recent years. “The increase in magnesium supplement use is likely due to rising awareness of its benefits,” said Ravi Sharma, director of Pharmacy Services at Burjeel Holdings.

“I’ve noticed more patients asking for magnesium supplements and prescriptions. Most say they use it for stress relief and sleep problems,” explained Dr. John Carlo Brojan, an internal medicine specialist at Canadian Specialist Hospital Dubai.

Doctors believe several factors are contributing to this rise in magnesium supplement use, including greater health awareness, social media influence, and dietary deficiencies.

Dr. Areej Al Khalil, a family medicine specialist at Saudi German Hospital Dubai, noted, “The Covid pandemic has increased health awareness, leading people to focus more on their well-being, which includes taking supplements like magnesium.”

Dr. Al Khalil added, “Social media plays a role, too, with influencers promoting magnesium for stress relief, improved sleep, and muscle relaxation. Many people also lack sufficient magnesium in their diets, making supplements an attractive option.”

However, healthcare professionals warn that using magnesium supplements without proper advice can have serious side effects. “Taking too much magnesium can result in significant health risks,” said Dr. Brojan. “These can include irregular heartbeats, severe breathing issues, and, in rare cases, magnesium toxicity, which can be life-threatening.”

Health experts emphasize that magnesium is crucial for individuals with low magnesium levels (hypomagnesemia) or those with severe conditions like pre-eclampsia, but supplements should be taken only under medical supervision. “Anything in excess can be harmful,” said Dr. Al Khalil. “Our bodies can regulate magnesium, but too much from supplements can cause serious complications.”

Doctors are urging residents to seek advice from healthcare professionals before starting magnesium supplements, as taking them without proper medical consultation can lead to significant health risks.
