Dubai, a desert city where flowers bloom abundantly, is transforming its roads into visually stunning landscapes. While focusing on safe transportation, the emirate is also enhancing its roads to create an eye-pleasing environment. With skyscrapers alongside lush greenery, Dubai blends modernity with nature.
In a Dh245-million effort, seven new projects have been completed to plant and beautify key intersections along Sheikh Zayed Road (SZR) and Al Khail Road. This initiative is part of the “Green Dubai Project.”
Creating Green Spaces in the Heart of the City
The new projects aim to combine urban development with extensive green spaces using sustainable planting practices that meet global standards. The projects have introduced 2.5 million flowers and ornamental plants, along with 6,500 trees, all maintained by advanced water-efficient irrigation systems.
Dawoud Al Hajri, Director General of Dubai Municipality, said, “These projects show our commitment to green infrastructure and improving the quality of life. We’re expanding green spaces, ensuring environmental sustainability, and using smart irrigation systems to optimize water use.”
This initiative aligns with the vision of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai. In 2023, Dubai Municipality planted more than 185,000 trees, averaging 500 trees per day. Dubai’s green space grew by 234 hectares in 2023, up from 170 hectares in 2022.
Beautification Along Sheikh Zayed Road
The projects on Sheikh Zayed Road focused on key intersections. Four major projects were completed, including beautification at intersections with Al Yelayes Street and Al Jameel Street. The areas along Sheikh Zayed Road, from Umm Suqeim Street to Al Yelayes Street, also saw extensive planting.
These works covered 250,000 square meters, with nearly 1.5 million flower and plant seedlings, 3,500 trees, and 290,000 square meters of soil mulching. The soil mulching prevents erosion while enhancing the area’s natural beauty.
Green Changes to Al Khail Road Intersections
Three major projects on Al Khail Road included beautification of intersections with Al Meydan Street, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Street, and Umm Suqeim Street. This project covered over 625,000 square meters, with 1 million flowers and plant seedlings, 3,000 trees, and 143,654 square meters of soil mulch.
