EU Orders Apple to Remove Geo-Blocking on App Store and Other Services

The European Union (EU) has instructed Apple to stop geo-blocking, a practice where content is restricted based on a user’s location, on services like the App Store, Apple Arcade, Music, iTunes Store, Books, and Podcasts.

The European Commission revealed that it had discovered potentially illegal geo-blocking practices on some of Apple’s media services and warned of enforcement actions by national regulators if Apple does not resolve the issue.

“We are intensifying efforts to fight geo-blocking. No company, big or small, should discriminate against customers based on nationality, residence, or location,” said European Commissioner Margrethe Vestager.

The EU has given Apple a month to propose how it plans to address these geo-blocking concerns.
