Greece’s Bold $8 Billion ‘Smart City’ Along the Coastline Promises Luxury Living & Innovation

Just a few miles from the iconic Acropolis in Athens, a groundbreaking “smart city” project is taking shape along the Saronic Gulf. This initiative aims to create an innovative urban environment that redefines coastal living in Greece. With cranes towering over the 50-story Riviera Tower—the centerpiece of this ambitious development—the city is expected to accommodate around 30,000 residents within a 6.2-square-kilometer area. Led by Lamda Development, the $8.5 billion project is set to be three times the size of Monaco, representing a significant investment in the future of urban living in Greece.

As part of a broader effort to attract international investment and stimulate Greece’s economy, the smart city will feature the Riviera Tower, which, upon its completion in 2026, will stand as Athens’ tallest skyscraper. Designed with eco-friendly infrastructure and equipped with state-of-the-art technology to promote sustainable living, the project promises residents a modern, interconnected lifestyle that embraces nature. Lamda Development CEO Odisseas Athanasiou envisions the city as a symbol of Greece’s revival, describing it as a “beacon” of innovation and luxury.

However, this vision has drawn criticism from some who fear the development could turn into a “ghetto for the rich,” potentially excluding lower-income families from this new urban oasis. Supporters argue that the project heralds a new era for Greece, utilizing private investment to reshape the country’s image globally and foster tech-driven, sustainable growth.

Set to be completed by 2036, Greece’s new smart city aims to merge luxury, technology, and a reimagined coastal experience for Athens and beyond, marking a significant leap forward in the nation’s urban evolution.
