Speaking during a visit by senior Iranian official Ali Larijani, Mikati stressed the importance of halting Israeli aggression and fully implementing the resolution without alterations.

The conflict has escalated with Israel intensifying its ground offensive and airstrikes on Hezbollah-controlled regions and other areas. Mikati highlighted Lebanon’s rejection of any ceasefire terms that compromise its sovereignty, emphasizing ongoing efforts to reach an agreement.

What Is Resolution 1701?

Adopted in 2006, the resolution ended hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, establishing a buffer zone patrolled by the Lebanese army and UN peacekeepers. It also restricted military activity in the region to maintain Lebanon’s sovereignty.

Current Developments

Diplomatic talks led by the US and Russia are underway, with a draft truce proposal submitted by US Ambassador Lisa Johnson to Lebanese officials. However, Lebanon has not officially responded. Meanwhile, Hezbollah and Israeli forces continue to clash, with thousands of casualties reported on both sides.

Iran has pledged support for any decision by the Lebanese government, while Israel insists on retaining freedom to act if Hezbollah breaches agreements. Lebanon has dismissed this demand as a violation of its sovereignty.
