A family outing turned tragic on Friday when 15-year-old Indian expat student Ahmed Abdulla Mafaz drowned while swimming at Mamzar Beach in Dubai. His older sister, Fathima, a university student, was rescued just in time, as their father, Mohammed Ashraf, shared during an emotional interview with Gulf News.
The incident occurred when the siblings entered the water, unaware of the strong undercurrents and waves hidden beneath the seemingly calm surface.
A Harrowing Experience
Ashraf recounted the terrifying moments leading up to the tragedy. “We were enjoying a family day at the beach. My son and daughter went swimming, but the waves were too powerful,” he said, his voice heavy with grief.
He described how Ahmed fought against the currents while trying to protect his sister. Despite their efforts, the relentless waves pulled him away. Lifeguards and other beachgoers were able to rescue Fathima, but Ahmed could not be saved.
“My son was full of life and always loved the water. I can’t believe he’s gone,” Ashraf said, struggling to hold back tears.
Community Shocked and Saddened
Ahmed’s classmates and the Indian expat community in Dubai expressed their sorrow over the tragic loss. A memorial service organized by the family attracted dozens of well-wishers, who came to offer prayers and condolences.
This incident has also highlighted the importance of beach safety, particularly as the UAE’s coastline can have unpredictable undercurrents.
Call for Caution and Beach Safety
Local authorities have emphasized the need to adhere to safety guidelines when visiting beaches. Swimmers are encouraged to:
Check the weather and water conditions prior to entering.
Remain within designated swimming zones.
Refrain from swimming during high tides or in areas marked with warning flags.
“We urge families to stay alert, particularly with children and teenagers,” stated a Dubai Municipality official. “This tragedy highlights the risks associated with swimming in unmonitored areas.”
A Final Goodbye
Ahmed Abdulla Mafaz leaves behind a family struggling with an unimaginable loss. His father expressed, “Ahmed was not just my son but also my best friend. His laughter, kindness, and enthusiasm for life will always be remembered.”
As the family begins to cope with their grief, this incident serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of beach safety and the necessity for heightened caution when enjoying the UAE’s stunning yet unpredictable waters.
