This announcement followed RTA’s recent ‘Talk to Us’ virtual session, where commuters shared suggestions, feedback, and ideas. The discussions focused on enhancing local bus routes within Dubai and intercity services connecting Dubai with other emirates.

Key Takeaways from the Session

During the session, several actionable proposals were discussed, including expanding the Dubai bus network and intercity services. According to RTA, this step addresses the increasing demand for public transport while ensuring smoother and more efficient commutes for passengers across the UAE.

RTA shared that buses transported 89.2 million passengers between January and June this year, accounting for 24.5% of the total public transport ridership in the first half of 2024.

Reducing Traffic During Peak Hours

To further ease traffic congestion, RTA has proposed introducing remote and flexible working hours. These measures could reduce peak-hour traffic on Dubai’s main roads by 30%.

Citing studies, RTA stated that allowing a two-hour flexible start time or implementing remote workdays—four to five days a month—could significantly reduce morning peak travel times.

Other Traffic Management Strategies

In addition to expanding the bus network, RTA plans to:

  • Extend truck movement restrictions.
  • Introduce more dedicated lanes for buses and taxis.
  • Provide better first and last-mile connectivity.
  • Encourage carpooling and greater public transport use by employees.

These initiatives aim to make public transportation a more convenient option, reducing reliance on private vehicles and easing traffic in the city.
