In a significant development for both cricket and Saudi Arabia, the kingdom is set to host the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) player auction in Jeddah. This event marks Saudi Arabia’s first major engagement with cricket on a global scale, highlighting its aspirations to become a center for international sporting events.

The two-day auction, starting Sunday, showcases the kingdom’s increasing interest in cricket, a sport cherished by millions of South Asian expatriates residing there. This initiative aligns with Saudi Arabia’s broader strategy to utilize high-profile sports to diversify its oil-dependent economy under Vision 2030, led by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

A New Chapter for Saudi Sports
Prince Saud bin Mishal, chairman of the Saudi Cricket Federation, emphasized that hosting the auction reflects the kingdom’s commitment to enhancing cricket’s status in the region. “This event demonstrates our dedication to developing the sport and establishing Saudi Arabia as a global hub for premier sporting events,” he stated.

Expanding Cricket’s Reach
The choice to hold the IPL auction in Jeddah is viewed as a strategic partnership, indicating the IPL’s intent to broaden its global appeal. With Saudi Arabia’s significant investments in sports such as football and Formula 1, cricket is now part of the mix, tapping into the vast potential fanbase among South Asian migrant workers in the country.

Sports as a Soft Power Tool
Saudi Arabia has emerged as a key player in the global sports arena, with previous major investments including LIV Golf, boxing championships, and its successful bid to host the 2034 FIFA World Cup. By branching into cricket, the kingdom aims to further enhance its soft power and economic transformation objectives.

A Win for IPL’s Globalization Goals
For the IPL, this collaboration marks a crucial step in broadening its international reach. By relocating the player auction to Jeddah, the tournament can connect with new audiences, merging one of the world’s most lucrative cricket leagues with a fresh market.
