A 5.3 magnitude earthquake shook the Mulugu district of Telangana early Wednesday morning, as reported by the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). The tremor occurred around 7:27 AM local time and was centered near the Mulugu region at a depth of 40 kilometers.

Thankfully, there have been no immediate reports of injuries or significant damage. Authorities are monitoring the situation, and further updates are awaited.

Understanding India’s Seismic Zones

India is divided into four seismic zones based on earthquake intensity: Zone II, Zone III, Zone IV, and Zone V. Zone V experiences the highest seismic activity, while Zone II has the lowest. Telangana falls under Zone II, which is considered a low-intensity seismic zone.

Out of India’s total landmass, about:

  • 11% lies in Zone V,
  • 18% in Zone IV,
  • 30% in Zone III,
  • and the remaining 41% in Zone II.

Overall, around 59% of India’s landmass is prone to earthquakes of varying intensities.
