Liverpool Held, but Slot Calls Salah ‘Special’

Arne Slot praised Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah as “special” after the star player scored twice in a thrilling 3-3 draw against Newcastle on Wednesday. Salah’s performance once again highlighted his importance to Liverpool, who are leading the Premier League.

Despite Fabian Schar’s 90th-minute equalizer following a mistake by Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher, Liverpool remain strong contenders for their first league title since 2020. Much of this success can be credited to Salah’s outstanding form this season.

The Egyptian superstar has already netted 15 goals across all competitions, with nine goals in his last seven Premier League matches.

However, Salah’s future at Liverpool is uncertain, as his contract is set to expire at the end of the season, and no extension has been agreed upon yet. There is also speculation about a potential move to Saudi Arabia, which Salah himself has hinted at, saying he feels “more out than in” at the club.

While Arne Slot avoided discussing Salah’s future directly, he emphasized how crucial the player is to the team. “It’s hard to predict what will happen long-term, but right now, Salah is in a great place,” Slot said. “He’s part of a strong team that gives him great opportunities, and he consistently does special things.”

Slot praised Salah’s ability to turn a game around even when not at his best. “For the first hour, he wasn’t at his best, but then he produced two goals, an assist, hit the bar, and was a constant threat. That’s what makes him special,” Slot added. “His finishing is so precise—he’s a unique player.”

Newcastle took the lead in the first half with a brilliant strike from Alexander Isak. Salah set up Curtis Jones for an equalizer in the 50th minute, but Newcastle regained the lead through Anthony Gordon just 12 minutes later. Salah then equalized again in the 68th minute and gave Liverpool the lead with seven minutes left. However, a late error by Kelleher allowed Newcastle to secure a draw.

Commenting on Kelleher’s mistake, Slot said, “Isak’s shot was so powerful, I’m not even sure Caoimhin saw it. He has been excellent for us overall, but unfortunately, he misjudged the situation for the equalizer.”
