French President Emmanuel Macron is set to welcome over 35 world leaders, including US president-elect Donald Trump, at the newly restored Notre Dame Cathedral on Saturday. This international event highlights Macron’s leadership on the global stage.
Before the ceremony, Mr. Trump is expected to meet Ukraine’s leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy alongside President Macron. The outgoing US administration will be represented by First Lady Jill Biden.
Earlier this week, Trump expressed his admiration for Macron’s efforts to restore Notre Dame on his Truth Social account, stating, “The French leader has done a wonderful job ensuring that Notre Dame has been restored to its full glory, and even more so. It will be a very special day for all!”
Notre Dame’s Remarkable Restoration
The restoration of Notre Dame took over five years following a devastating fire in April 2019, which destroyed its wooden roof, toppled the iconic spire, and severely damaged its upper walls. However, the vaulted stone ceiling protected the interior from extensive destruction.
President Macron visited the 850-year-old cathedral last month to inspect the restoration ahead of its reopening on December 7. He called the project a “challenge that many considered insane.” The restoration has involved nearly 2,000 workers and an investment of €700 million ($739.3 million).
Donations poured in globally, including from French luxury sector billionaires like Francois Henri Pinault and the Arnault family, raising over €840 million ($888 million). Funds remain for future investments in the cathedral.
A Day of Diplomacy and Legacy
Among the notable attendees is Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim, according to reports from Le Figaro. Prince William, representing King Charles III, will also attend. However, much of the attention will be on Donald Trump, marking his first international trip since winning the presidency last month.
This occasion also offers Macron a chance to strengthen his ties with Trump. An advisor to Macron noted, “It is absolutely not exceptional that the elected president of a great friendly nation is invited.”
Restoration Highlights
The cathedral’s iconic 19th-century Gothic spire has been replaced with an exact replica, and its stained glass windows have regained their brilliance. The cathedral’s organ has also been restored, and a new fire safety system, featuring discreet water pipes, is now in place.
Macron, joined by his wife Brigitte, personally inspected key restored areas, including the nave and chapel, last month. During a ceremony to thank the workers, Macron highlighted their contributions, from woodcraft to metalwork, and praised their dedication.
A Global Attraction
Notre Dame is expected to attract 14-15 million visitors annually after its reopening. While there is debate over whether to charge an entry fee, visiting remains free for now, despite new fees at other landmarks.
As Notre Dame reopens its doors, it stands not only as a symbol of resilience but also as a testament to the collaborative effort of thousands who brought the historic monument back to life.
