UAE President Issues Federal Decree-Law to Amend Judicial Authority

President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has issued a Federal Decree-Law introducing changes to the Federal Judicial Authority Law. These updates include adjustments to roles, benefits, and responsibilities for judiciary members.

One major change is awarding the rank of Minister to the President of the Federal Supreme Court and the UAE Attorney-General. This rank also includes all the allowances and benefits set for ministers under current federal laws.

The decree also outlines that salaries, allowances, bonuses, and other benefits for other judiciary members will now be decided by the Federal Decree. This includes determining rewards for judiciary members.

Additionally, the amendments redefine the Federal Attorney-General’s responsibilities. The Attorney-General will now oversee crimes that impact the Union’s interests and other cases assigned to the Federal Judiciary by UAE law.

The jurisdiction of the Attorney-General for other crimes will align with the Federal Judiciary’s geographical boundaries. The Federal Judicial Council must approve any decisions about jurisdictional divisions of Federal Prosecution Offices.

The new law also specifies that the Federal Attorney-General will decide the workplace locations and jurisdictional divisions for Public Prosecution members. A technical office will assist the Attorney-General and oversee tasks across all Emirates.

For court leadership appointments, the decree states that presidents of Courts of First Instance and Courts of Appeal will be appointed by the Chairman of the Federal Judiciary. These decisions will be based on recommendations from the Head of the Judicial Inspection Department and Judiciary approval.

Similarly, Public Prosecutors and higher-ranking officials will be appointed by the Federal Attorney-General, with approval from the Judiciary.
