The UAE’s new traffic law imposes severe penalties for driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs

The United Arab Emirates is set to implement a tough new traffic law next year, targeting the serious issue of driving while under the influence of alcohol and drugs. This updated legislation introduces strict penalties, including significant fines, jail time, and the suspension of driving licenses for those who violate the law. Authorities stress that these actions reflect the UAE’s dedication to improving road safety and reducing reckless driving.

Under the new rules, anyone caught driving while intoxicated or under the influence of drugs will face fines that could reach several thousand dirhams. Moreover, repeat offenders may encounter longer prison sentences and extended license suspensions that could last for several years. The law also allows courts to mandate rehabilitation programs for those struggling with substance abuse.

These tougher regulations are intended to decrease traffic accidents and fatalities, which are frequently associated with impaired driving. Officials point out that driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is a major risk to public safety, and the increased penalties aim to discourage such actions. Additionally, road safety campaigns and educational initiatives are being launched to inform residents about the new law’s consequences.

The changes have been largely welcomed by residents and road safety advocates, who commend the government’s proactive stance against dangerous driving. However, some legal experts advise drivers to familiarize themselves with the new regulations to prevent any unintentional infractions. With these reforms, the UAE aspires to establish a global benchmark for road safety and create a safer environment for all road users.
