A man tries to stab an elderly imam outside a Riyadh mosque

The motive for the attack has not been formally revealed by the Saudi Ministry of Interior. June 30, 2025, Riyadh A man was seen on camera trying to attack an elderly imam just after prayer in a frightening event that happened outside a mosque in Riyadh. The shocking footage, which has since gone viral on social media, shows worshippers intervening swiftly to prevent the attack and restrain the suspect until security forces arrived.

According to eyewitnesses, the imam had just exited the mosque when the assailant approached him suddenly with a knife. The imam, believed to be in his late 70s, narrowly escaped serious injury thanks to the immediate response of congregants.

The suspect’s detention was verified by the Saudi Ministry of Interior, but no other information regarding his name or the reason for the attempted stabbing has been made public. An official enquiry is in progress, according to authorities, and the public will be notified as soon as additional details are known.

“The safety of worshippers and religious figures is a top priority,” a statement from the Ministry noted. “We commend the community members who acted quickly and responsibly.”

The elderly imam, whose name has not been officially disclosed, is said to be recovering and in stable condition. The attempted attack has sparked public outcry across the Kingdom, with many taking to social media to express their shock and support for the imam.

Following the tragedy, authorities have allegedly increased security around mosques as they stress how crucial it is to keep places of worship peaceful.

In a nation where religious leaders are highly revered and mosques are typically seen as safe havens, this occurrence represents an uncommon instance of violence. The Kingdom has pledged to conduct a comprehensive investigation and take strong legal action against the offender.
