Salma Al Suwaidi’s life story is a testament to perseverance, passion, and exceptional talent. As a child who faced the challenges of polio, she refused to let her physical limitations dictate her future. Now, at 52, she is recognized as one of the UAE’s most accomplished wildlife photographers.

Wearing a specially designed abaya inspired by a ghillie suit—a camouflage outfit meant for blending into natural surroundings—Salma captures the intricate beauty of wildlife in the UAE. Her book, Common Birds and Their Nests in the UAE, features stunning images of native bird species and begins with a foreword by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

Earlier this month, Salma’s remarkable contributions were honored when she received the prestigious ‘Photography Content Creator’ award at the Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum International Photography Award (HIPA). This special category award, along with a $50,000 cash prize, recognized her impactful storytelling and commitment to preserving the UAE’s natural heritage.

Salma attributes her journey to the healing power of nature and her passion for photography. “Growing up with polio taught me resilience,” she shared. “Through my lens, I aim to reveal the delicate beauty of our environment and inspire conservation efforts.”

Her book not only highlights the UAE’s vibrant birdlife but also serves as an educational tool, raising awareness about the importance of protecting wildlife habitats. With breathtaking visuals and thoughtful narratives, Salma’s work connects art with advocacy.

The Emirati photographer’s innovative ghillie-suit-inspired abaya has also become a signature element of her craft. “It allows me to immerse myself in the wild without disturbing the natural environment,” she noted.

Salma’s accomplishments have resonated throughout the UAE and beyond, earning her widespread admiration. Her journey from a polio survivor to an internationally recognized photographer is truly inspiring.
