Abu Dhabi Bans Well Drilling in Protected Zones to Save Groundwater

admin

Abu Dhabi has banned the drilling of groundwater wells in protected areas as part of a major effort by the emirate to save its natural water resources. The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) issued a new resolution to support the conservation of groundwater, especially in environmentally protected and high-priority areas.

The law aims at the areas considered vital to environmental balance and water quality. It follows increasing concerns about over-extraction, which has caused the quick depletion and salinization of aquifers throughout the UAE.

Authorities stress that groundwater is a non-renewable resource in the area and must be managed carefully to ensure long-term water security. The violators of the new rule may face fines and legal action as part of the EAD’s stricter enforcement efforts.

This resolution supports Abu Dhabi’s 2030 environmental vision, aligning with sustainable development goals and reinforcing the UAE’s commitment to responsible resource management in the face of climate challenges.
