Several individuals in Abu Dhabi have been fined Dh165,000 for unauthorized entry into a nature reserve, where they caused damage to vital animal habitats, authorities announced on Friday.

The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) reported the incident, which took place in one of its protected areas in Al Wathba. According to the EAD, those involved had entered the sanctuary without the necessary permit.

Al Wathba spans a significant area and is home to some of the emirate’s valuable natural assets. Among these is the Al Wathba Wetland Reserve, which draws thousands of flamingos during autumn and spring, along with several species that inhabit the area year-round. The reserve also contains fossil dunes estimated to be around 120,000 years old.

“Preserving the biodiversity and natural heritage of the emirate is a shared responsibility,” the EAD emphasized. “Let us all adhere to environmental laws and contribute to safeguarding our natural resources for future generations. Together, we can work towards a better environment.”

While certain parts of Al Wathba are accessible to the public, entry to the reserve remains restricted due to its protected status.
