The Department of Health (DoH) in Abu Dhabi has introduced WINREVAIR, a new medication for pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), making it the first in the region to offer this innovative treatment.
Patients or caregivers can administer WINREVAIR under medical guidance through a subcutaneous injection every three weeks. This treatment helps reduce narrowing in blood vessels, improving blood flow and easing pressure on the heart. It is used alongside other therapies to lower mortality risks in low to moderate-risk patients.
This breakthrough medication also enhances patients’ ability to exercise and reduces pulmonary vascular resistance. Studies suggest that when combined with current therapies, WINREVAIR could extend life expectancy by more than ten years.
The first batch of WINREVAIR, developed by MSD a leading biopharmaceutical company arrived in Abu Dhabi earlier this month. Clinical trials have shown that adding WINREVAIR to existing treatments reduces the risk of worsening health events by 84%.
Approved by both the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA), WINREVAIR works by targeting specific pathways that cause excessive cell growth in pulmonary blood vessels.
Globally, pulmonary arterial hypertension affects 15 to 60 people per million, with 70–80% of cases occurring in women, mostly between the ages of 50 and 65.
