On July 16, 2025, Italian cyclist Samuele Privitera tragically died at the age of 19 following a high-speed collision during the Giro della Valle d’Aosta – Mont Blanc opening stage. About 35 kilometres from the finish line in Aosta, Privitera, who was riding for the Hagens Berman Jayco team, lost control on a downhill stretch close to Pontey. According to reports, he lost his helmet and struck a barrier while driving at almost 70 km/h. He passed away at the hospital from severe head injuries and cardiac arrest in spite of prompt medical attention and resuscitation efforts.
The precise circumstances are still being investigated, according to the Italian Cycling Federation, which confirmed the incident. A moment of silence was observed prior to the start of the third stage of the race, and the second stage was cancelled out of respect. Teams were allowed to continue, and many decided to wear black armbands in remembrance of Privitera.
From Imperia, Privitera was a bright young man who was respected for his zeal and commitment. He is the “life and personality” of the team, according to team director Axel Merckx, who praised his contagious happiness and spirit. Privitera’s potential and the significant loss to cycling were acknowledged by the cycling community, which included riders at the Tour de France.
