Air India Seeks Boeing Jets Rejected by China, Plans Fleet Expansion

Air India is in advanced negotiations to buy Boeing planes originally ordered by Chinese carriers but left on the ground due to regulatory issues and persistent geopolitical tensions. Sources familiar with the situation disclose that Air India is seeking near-term opportunities to expand its fleet as it continues to pursue expansion plans.

The Tata Group-owned carrier is not only eager to buy the already constructed jets but also wants to book future delivery slots. As demand for air travel recovered strongly after the pandemic, particularly in India’s booming aviation market, Air India is looking to close capacity gaps quicker by taking advantage of Boeing’s current production pipeline.

Industry watchers view this move as a tactical victory for both Air India and Boeing. It presents Boeing with a means of redistributing grounded aircraft due to diplomatic standstills, and it provides Air India with faster access to newer jets without delay. The airplanes in question have been reported as including the 737 MAX and 787 Dreamliner series.

This action also corresponds with Air India’s recent restructuring and rebranding. With additional overseas routes in the pipeline and increasing competition from regional and international players, the airline is positioning itself as a central participant in the renaissance of Asia’s aviation industry.
