Al Nasr Club’s young stars put on a dazzling show in the 2023 Dubai Open Badminton Championships, sweeping several age groups in the emirate’s flagship grassroots competition. The young players secured a total of 12 podium places in the U-11, U-13, and U-15 categories, highlighting Dubai’s expanding talent pool in international badminton.

Standout Performances:
• Champion U-15 Rashed Al Hammadi (14) won unanimously without losing a single game
• Sisters Maryam and Aisha Hassan dominated gold/silver in U-13 girls’ singles
• The club team U-11 dominated all three podium spots in boys’ doubles
• Trainers complimented 9-year-old Abdullah Mohammed’s technical savvy

Building Future Champions:
The Shabab Al Ahli Club tournament hosted more than 300 youth players from 22 clubs, but Al Nasr’s holistic training program was particularly successful. “Our emphasis on footwork training and mental toughness is reaping rewards,” head coach Lin Danwei, the former Malaysian national team coach, said. The club’s top-of-the-range badminton academy has brought three UAE national team players onto the field over the last two years.

Road to Professional Play:
With this victory, several Al Nasr players earned qualification for:
– December’s Asian Junior Championships in Thailand
– 2024 Dubai World Superseries qualifiers
– UAE National Team selection camps

Community Impact:
The tournament served to showcase Dubai’s dedication to developing badminton at grassroots level, with organizers unveiling plans to build six new badminton courts in public areas around the emirate and school promotions to search for future prospects.

Next Generation Watch:

1. Yousef Al Marzouqi
2. Fatima Al Ketbi
