Be Warned! New WhatsApp Photo Scam Can Drain Your Bank Account in an Instant

There’s a new WhatsApp scam that has emerged, and it’s more threatening than ever—no links, OTPs, or suspicious messages required. Cybersecurity experts have alerted that opening a photo received via WhatsApp might be enough to let hackers gain entry into your phone and access sensitive information, including banking details.

This fresh malware is hidden in seemingly innocuous image files. The malware then quietly activates when the image is opened, evading standard phone security mechanisms and pilfering passwords, personal data, and even two-factor authentication codes.

In contrast to older scams that depended on user mistake, including opening dodgy links or inserting OTPs, this way exploits loopholes in media processing frameworks—resulting in it being particularly cunning and difficult to identify.

Users are highly recommended to steer clear of opening unwanted media files, even from familiar contacts, until WhatsApp releases a formal security update. Keeping your app and device software up-to-date and employing a reputable mobile security software can provide an added layer of protection.
