In the Philippines’ partial and unofficial Senate race results, Bong Go and Bam Aquino have emerged as top contenders, with Kiko Pangilinan making a surprising return to the political spotlight. The results, based on around 70% of transmitted election returns, reveal a complex mix of old and new political dynamics.
Bong Go, the longtime ally of former President Rodrigo Duterte, still has the strong backing of Mindanao and Duterte-leaning provinces. Bam Aquino, with his emphasis on education and digitalization, is gaining steadily, indicating voter enthusiasm for reform-minded candidates.
The sudden revival of Kiko Pangilinan, ex-Senate Minority Leader, has taken analysts aback. Previously lagging behind in previous polls, Pangilinan has now entered the top 12, driven by people’s mobilization and a very visible social media campaign that focused on food security and youth empowerment.
In the meantime, candidates running under the Marcos-Duterte alliance are consistent in their performance, citing the coalition’s continued grip nationwide. As counting proceeds, the eventual make-up of the Senate may have implications on legislative priorities and political blocs as the Marcos presidency enters its second half.
