Pakistan’s fast bowler Mohammad Amir has officially retired from international cricket, bringing an end to his eventful and controversial career. The 32-year-old, known for his impressive swing bowling, announced his decision on Saturday, sharing the news through a post on X.
Amir had earlier come out of retirement in 2023 to participate in the T20 World Cup held in the United States and West Indies. However, he has now decided to step away for good.
“After careful consideration, I have taken the difficult decision to retire from international cricket,” Amir said. “These decisions are never easy, but they are necessary. I believe it’s time for the next generation to step up and take Pakistan cricket to greater heights.”
This isn’t Amir’s first retirement. He had previously quit international cricket in December 2021 after being excluded from a tour to New Zealand. Despite retiring from international cricket, Amir has remained active in franchise T20 leagues worldwide.
Amir’s career stats highlight his talent and contributions to Pakistan cricket. He played 36 Test matches, taking 119 wickets, while in 61 ODIs, he claimed 81 wickets. In T20 internationals, he bagged 71 wickets in 62 matches.
His career, however, has not been without controversy. In 2010, Amir was banned for five years after being found guilty of spot-fixing during a Test match in England. Alongside teammates Salman Butt and Mohammad Asif, he was later jailed in the UK for his role in the scandal.
Amir made a comeback in 2016 and represented Pakistan in all formats until his retirement in 2021. Currently, he is participating in a T10 league in Sri Lanka, continuing his presence in the cricketing world.
While his career had its ups and downs, Amir remains one of Pakistan’s most talented bowlers, and his retirement marks the end of an era.
