Breaking Stereotypes: Women Loco Pilots in India See Five-Fold Increase in a Decade

Women are driving change—literally—as the number of women loco pilots in India has surged five-fold in the last 10 years. From just 371 women in 2014, the Indian Railways now boasts at least 1,828 female loco pilots, marking a significant step towards gender inclusivity in a traditionally male-dominated profession.

This unprecedented surge showcases the effect of progressive policies, skill enhancement initiatives, and evolving social attitudes towards women working in technical fields. A number of these pioneers drive high-speed trains, freight locomotives, and even high-profile services such as the Vande Bharat Express.

In spite of problems like long working hours, hectic schedules, and safety issues, these women keep on shattering barriers with their perseverance and grit. The success of women loco pilots not only opens the way for more gender diversity in Indian Railways but also encourages future generations to join the rail transport profession.

With greater encouragement of women to pursue STEM and technical education, India is seeing a revolutionary change where more women are driving the bus—literally and metaphorically.
