Common UAE driving errors that might result in expensive fines

Most drivers in the UAE might not know they are breaking lane regulations until it’s too late—and the consequence might be an expensive fine or black points on their license. Authorities persist in clamping down on offenses like tailgating, improper lane changes, and illegal use of the hard shoulder.

Under the UAE Traffic Law, driving on the hard shoulder for non-emergency purposes can attract a fine of Dh1,000 and 6 black points. This provision is enforced rigorously, particularly in areas around highways and exits where misuse of shoulders can hinder ambulances or emergency vehicles.

Another frequent error is not keeping a safe distance between cars, or tailgating. This offense is punishable by a fine of Dh400 and 4 black points and is still one of the leading causes of rear-end crashes in the UAE. The application of smart radars has facilitated the detection of such practices.

Drivers are also reminded to signal when changing lanes and not drift across lanes, especially on highways. Careless or sudden lane changes can cost Dh400 or more and can lead to severe accidents. The UAE authorities urge all drivers to remain aware and vigilant to make roads safer for all.
