The UAE is ranked third globally for its efforts to combat cyberattacks and cyber threats, according to a top official. Dr. Mohamed Al Kuwaiti, head of cybersecurity for the UAE Government, stated that these attacks have become more frequent and severe due to rising geopolitical tensions.

“The UAE has faced cyberattacks for a long time, but recently, due to geopolitical factors, the number of attacks has significantly increased in frequency, quality, and volume. In fact, if you track these attacks, the UAE ranks as the third most targeted nation worldwide. Thanks to the hard work of many, we have detected and stopped all of these attacks,” Al Kuwaiti said during the FutureSec Summit 2024.

He explained that many of these attacks have been thoroughly investigated, with help from partner organizations to identify those responsible.

“We have built a strong and resilient infrastructure for small, medium, and large businesses, as well as government agencies. We cannot predict the future since many challenges lie ahead, but we must be ready for cyberattacks,” Dr. Mohamed Al Kuwaiti, head of cybersecurity, UAE Government, said.

As reported, the UAE experienced 200,000 cyberattacks in one week, all of which were successfully identified and countered due to the strict measures implemented by the UAE and its partners, both domestically and internationally.

Recently, the UAE was ranked first in the United Nations’ Global Cybersecurity Index, highlighting the tremendous efforts made by the government, private sector, academia, and all ecosystem players.

Ransomware Threats Rising

Dr. Al Kuwaiti noted that ransomware attacks are increasing worldwide, with a rise of 32 percent, prompting the government to take proactive steps to address the issue.

“Last week, we conducted the National Cyber Drill to ensure that everyone has a communication channel and is properly trained. Additionally, we perform monthly cyber drills that help maintain readiness and compliance,” he mentioned at the FutureSec Summit 2024.

The head of the UAE Cybersecurity Council added that new laws and regulations are being developed and will be introduced in the coming months.

He emphasized that everyone in the country must upgrade their systems to post-quantum cryptography, particularly in the financial sector, government entities, and critical infrastructure firms.

“The UAE is following its leadership’s vision in practical ways. We are not just creating plans; we are putting them into action to ensure safety and security for everyone.”

“We always encourage vigilance and proactive behavior when dealing with cyber threats. Reporting cyber incidents is crucial for us to act quickly and prevent further issues. This is essential in reducing attacks within the UAE.”
