Pakistani actor Danish Taimoor recently drew criticism after he made some comments about polygamy in which he cited Islamic teachings allowing men to marry four times. The statement was made during his appearance on media and immediately ignited debate on social media with many people terming his remarks as insensitive and out of date.
In a subsequent statement, Taimoor explained that his remarks were based on religious context and not meant to promote polygamy in contemporary relationships. “I respect everyone’s opinion, but I was merely saying what our religion allows,” he clarified.
The criticism was echoed by other celebrities and fans alike who contended that such assertions are what support negative stereotypes on marriage and the rights of women in Pakistan. Some others rose up to Taimoor’s defense, averring that he was merely reading from a religious maxim without pursuing an agenda.
In this debate, as it goes on, Taimoor called for courteous dialogue and made it a point to insist that every individual is entitled to follow their own choice regarding relations and marriage.
