Diljit Dosanjh’s highly awaited New Year’s Eve concert in Ludhiana hit a snag due to a legal complaint filed by Punditrao Dharenavar, an assistant professor from Chandigarh.
The complaint led the Deputy Director of the Women and Child Department in Punjab to issue a notice to Ludhiana’s District Commissioner. The notice urged authorities to stop Dosanjh from performing certain songs during his December 31, 2024, concert.
The notice specifically asked to ban songs accused of promoting alcohol, such as Patiala Pegg, 5 Tara Theke, and Case (Jeeb Vicho Feem Labbiya), even if the lyrics were changed. It also mentioned that Dosanjh had previously been warned by various commissions not to perform these songs.
Dharenavar expressed concerns about the influence of these songs on young people, especially minors who may be attending the concert. He also referred to a 2019 ruling from the Punjab and Haryana High Court, which banned the performance of songs promoting alcohol, drugs, or violence at public events.
Dharenavar threatened to take the matter to the Punjab and Haryana High Court if the concert went ahead with the controversial songs. He also criticized Dosanjh for wearing a pagadi, a traditional headpiece, while performing songs with such negative messages.
The Ludhiana concert, added at the last minute to Dosanjh’s Dil-Luminati India Tour, was supposed to be the grand finale of his three-month nationwide tour.
