Dubai Airports’ CEO Paul Griffiths plans to create eight smaller airports within the new Al Maktoum International Airport, aiming to bring back the personalized travel experience he admires.
“I want to design eight compact airports within one large space, with shared runways being the only common factor,” said Griffiths. He explained that travelers could step out of their cars or air taxis, board a train, and quickly reach their designated terminal without hassle.
Speaking at the Skift Global Forum East, a key event for discussing travel innovations, Griffiths shared his vision of a more user-friendly airport. He emphasized the importance of creating “intimate concourses” where planes, lounges, shops, and restaurants are conveniently close. His goal is for passengers arriving two hours early to spend nearly all their time enjoying shops and restaurants, minimizing time spent on formalities.
A Digital-First Approach
Dubai Airport has also launched an app designed to guide travelers to their gates, showcasing nearby shops and services along the way. The app reflects Griffiths’ desire to simplify airport processes and modernize the travel experience.
No More Stops or Hassles
Griffiths challenged the traditional airport structure, stating, “Airports need to stop following outdated systems and rethink how they operate. Imagine an airport with no stops, no check-ins, no baggage delays, and no passport control. All these processes should happen seamlessly while you move through a compact, easy-to-navigate space.”
He also questioned why baggage still relies on paper tags in the digital age. “Why can’t luggage manufacturers embed unique barcodes on suitcases instead of using paper labels?” he asked.
Building a Welcoming First Impression
Griffiths takes his role seriously, seeing airports as the first impression visitors have of a city. “The moment people step into the airport, they form their view of the country. A welcoming, smooth experience sets the tone for the city, and I take this responsibility very seriously,” he added.
Dubai Airports’ innovative approach promises to redefine air travel, focusing on convenience, digital integration, and creating a positive experience for all travelers.
