Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Careem, the regional multi-service app, have reached a milestone with 7.35 million bike trips in Dubai since 2020.

Careem Bike, the largest pedal-assist bike-sharing service in the region, has grown rapidly since its launch. With 197 stations across Dubai’s cycling tracks and about 1,800 bikes available for rent, Careem saw over 2.3 million rides in 2023 alone, a 66.3% rise from 2022. This increase highlights the high demand for biking in Dubai, especially for first- and last-mile trips, which made up 76% of total rides.

Since launching, users have collectively cycled 28.4 million km. The longest single trip covered 48km, from Quranic Park in Al Khawaneej to Marina Promenade. Residents made up 68% of these trips, while 32% came from tourists.

Cycling as a sustainable mobility option has reduced energy use and CO2 emissions. Since 2020, Careem Bike has saved over 4.32 million kg of CO2 emissions, equal to the output of 1,208 cars.

Hussain Al Banna, CEO of RTA’s Traffic and Roads Agency, commented, “This achievement reflects Dubai’s commitment to promoting sustainable transport and creating a bike-friendly city.”

Bassel Al Nahlaoui, Careem’s Managing Director of Mobility, said, “We’re thrilled to reach this milestone as more people choose bikes to get around Dubai. Thanks to our partnership with the RTA, Careem Bike has expanded across major areas of Dubai, making it the region’s leading bike-sharing service.”

Launched in 2020 to support Dubai’s sustainability goals and encourage active lifestyles, Careem Bike has now expanded to Abu Dhabi and Madinah, Saudi Arabia, with more growth plans underway.
