Dubai is testing the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to detect smoking inside taxis. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced that in-car cameras will be used for this purpose.
Smoking is already banned on all public transportation across the UAE, though the RTA did not disclose the specific technology being used for cigarette detection.
Improving Taxi Services in Dubai
The RTA has launched several initiatives to enhance taxi services in the emirate. One such initiative is a pilot program to install “high-quality air fresheners” in over 500 airport taxis. Additionally, inspection campaigns will be increased to ensure vehicle cleanliness.
Adel Shakri, Director of Planning and Business Development at the Public Transport Agency, explained the steps being taken:
- Awareness and training programs for drivers and instructors at driving schools will be expanded.
- A monthly operational index will track taxi cleanliness, covering both vehicles and drivers.
- Cleanliness-related observations will be monitored per 100,000 Hala Taxi trips.
Customer Feedback and Assessment
Starting in 2025, customer satisfaction surveys and mystery shopper assessments will be conducted every six months to evaluate taxi cleanliness. These efforts aim to raise service standards and improve the overall passenger experience.
