Dubai Metro Travel Rules: Can Children Travel Alone? RTA Clarifies

Parents in Dubai sometimes ask if their children can travel alone by public transport, particularly the Metro. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has an explicit ‘Unaccompanied Minor Policy’ aimed at guaranteeing the security and safety of minor travelers. According to the policy, there are certain age limits and conditions to be fulfilled so that a child can travel on the Metro without an accompanying person.

Under the RTA, children below 8 years need to be accompanied by an adult everywhere they use any public transportation, such as the Metro, buses, and trams. Children between the ages of 8 and 11 years can travel alone in city areas but only if they have a letter of consent from their parents. At the age of 12, children can travel unattended without any extra permission on all public transport modes.

The Dubai Metro also provides special cabins for women and children, providing a secure atmosphere for young travelers. Parents are urged to make their children comfortable with the use of Nol cards, be aware of emergency measures, and know whom to contact in case of need. Moreover, students between the ages of 5 and 23 can enjoy a 50% discount on the fare by obtaining a Student Nol Card.

Dubai’s public transport system is known for its safety, punctuality, and efficiency, making it a trusted choice for families. With the RTA’s child-specific guidelines in place, parents can feel more confident about allowing their older children to commute alone when necessary. However, regular communication and preparation are key to ensuring a smooth and safe travel experience for young riders.
