Dubai to Trial Self-Driving ‘Trackless Trams’: What to Expect

Dubai is set to introduce an exciting new transit option – self-driving “Trackless Trams” – at eight key locations throughout the emirate. This innovative transport system, revealed by Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), is part of a larger Main Roads Development Plan for 2024-2027, which includes 22 projects with a total investment of Dh16 billion. The initiative aims to support Dubai’s rapid growth and enhance road infrastructure for the benefit of over 6 million residents and visitors.

On November 3, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai, reviewed the RTA’s vision for the future of urban mobility. This ambitious project is intended to align with Dubai’s objectives for a sustainable, technology-driven, and efficient public transport system.

What Are Trackless Trams?
The “Trackless Tram” technology represents a new generation of electric trams that operate on virtual tracks, offering greater flexibility compared to traditional tram systems that depend on physical tracks. By utilizing a mix of autonomous driving technology, GPS, and advanced sensors, these trams can accurately navigate designated routes without the need for rail infrastructure. This approach not only lowers installation and maintenance costs but also enables the trams to function in areas where laying tracks would be difficult or unfeasible.

Where Will They Be Located?
The Trackless Tram pilot program will take place in eight prime locations in Dubai, selected to enhance connectivity in densely populated and frequently visited areas. This trial will evaluate the system’s performance in real-world conditions and assess public reception of the new technology. While specific routes have yet to be announced, these locations are anticipated to include high-traffic areas, improving access to business centers, tourist attractions, and residential neighborhoods.

A Step Towards Green Mobility
The Trackless Tram initiative is in line with Dubai’s commitment to sustainability. These fully electric trams provide an eco-friendly alternative to traditional diesel-powered public transport, contributing to a reduction in carbon emissions and an improvement in air quality. Through this pilot program, Dubai aims to make significant progress toward its clean energy goals by 2050, further establishing the city as a leader in sustainable and intelligent transport solutions.

Part of a Larger Transport Transformation
The self-driving trams represent just one aspect of the RTA’s extensive Main Roads Development Plan, which will launch 22 major projects designed to enhance Dubai’s road network. The Dh16 billion investment is aimed at accommodating the city’s rapid urban growth, addressing an expected population increase, and supporting economic development by improving road connectivity, reducing congestion, and creating a seamless travel experience throughout the city.

What to Expect Moving Forward
As the Trackless Tram pilot moves ahead, the RTA will evaluate the system’s performance and collect feedback to make necessary adjustments before considering a broader rollout. If successful, these self-driving trams could become a staple of Dubai’s transit system, paving the way for future advancements in autonomous public transport across the region. For now, residents and visitors in Dubai can anticipate a futuristic transport experience that combines convenience, sustainability, and cutting-edge technology, embodying the city’s vision for a smart, connected future.
