Dubai’s RTA Issues Urgent QR Code Scam Warning for Residents

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has warned residents about the rising threat of QR code scams in public places. This advisory comes after the recent rollout of QR codes on bus stop signboards to provide real-time schedules via the S’hail app.

Cybercriminals are taking advantage of the convenience of QR codes to dupe unsuspecting users into phishing scams, malware downloads, and financial fraud. The RTA called on commuters to be more vigilant, particularly when scanning QR codes in public transport stations, parking lots, and customer service centers.

To remain safe, the RTA recommends ensuring official QR codes, evading scans using tampered stickers or third-party sources, and ensuring the URL before typing in personal information. Scanning fake codes risks identity theft, hijacking of devices, and unauthorized fund transactions.

Citizens are urged to report suspicious QR codes and be cautious while using public transportation services. The RTA assures that safety of passengers is a high priority, and it will continue to make the public aware of digital security risks.
