Egypt’s Birth Rate Declines Below Two Million for the First Time Since 2007

Egypt’s annual birth rate fell below the two-million mark for the first time since 2007 in 2024, recording around 1.968 million births. The decline is at 3.8% lower than the previous year, or 77,000 fewer births.

Causes of the decline

The decline in birth rates is on account of several factors, including economic challenges, urbanization, and increased access to family planning services. These elements have led to a shift in societal attitudes towards family size and childbearing.

Implications for Population Growth

Even though the birth rate is decreasing, the population of Egypt is increasing to about 107 million in 2024. This growth is due to a high fertility rate among the existing populations and a large number of young people entering the reproductive age group.

Government Efforts

Due to the demographic shifts, the government of Egypt has adopted a range of policies targeting population growth management and sustainable development. These strategies include better healthcare services, improving economic conditions, and responsible family planning.

Declining birth rates in Egypt: A recent decline in birth rates is a fundamental shift in Egypt’s demographic scenario, reflecting greater social and economic changes in the country.
