Mohammed Hasan Al-Mutawwa’s story is a powerful example of resilience and determination. In 2018, a tragic accident left him paralyzed, but instead of giving up, he devoted his life to supporting people with disabilities and raising awareness about their challenges.
Before the accident, Mohammed was an active adventurer. “I was always moving, always doing something,” he recalled. But his life changed after a severe injury, shifting his focus to advocacy and support for people of determination.
A New Purpose After the Accident
After returning to Dubai from treatment in the US, Mohammed resumed his role as Director of the Sustainability Department at the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). With improved health and a stronger sense of purpose, he began sharing his journey online. Mohammed noticed a lack of Arabic content about living with disabilities and created videos to fill this gap. His content included practical advice, personal experiences, and tools to raise awareness.
One of his most impactful videos showcased how he installed a specialized car control device, allowing him to drive again. The video resonated with many, offering hope and insights to people facing similar challenges. The overwhelming community response encouraged Mohammed to continue sharing his experiences and guidance.
Leadership in Advocacy
In addition to his online presence, Mohammed joined the Advisory Council for People of Determination, where he worked for four years to improve policies and advocate for laws supporting individuals with disabilities. His efforts highlighted the need for accessibility and inclusion.
The Accident That Changed Everything
The life-altering accident occurred in 2018 during a visit to a farm in Dibba. While diving into a swimming pool, Mohammed misjudged its depth, hitting his head on the bottom. “The paralysis happened at the same moment,” he said. Initially thinking he had only bumped his head, he realized he couldn’t move when his friends rushed to help.
After being taken to a hospital in Dubai, doctors diagnosed him with a fractured neck vertebra. Following spinal fusion surgery and months of recovery, he faced an uncertain future. Determined to adapt, Mohammed began physical therapy to regain strength and learn basic skills like writing and driving.
Support and Rehabilitation
A pivotal moment came when Mattar Al-Tayer, Director-General of the RTA, visited Mohammed in the hospital, reassuring him with support and plans for his treatment in the US. This encouragement motivated Mohammed to undergo months of intensive rehabilitation in the US. While the journey was tough and uncertain, it shaped his determination to overcome his limitations.
The Role of Family and Community Support
Mohammed emphasized the crucial role of family in supporting individuals with disabilities. “A strong support system is key to facing challenges and adjusting to a new life,” he shared. He also called for greater community awareness, encouraging small acts of kindness, like opening doors for someone in a wheelchair, as a sign of empathy and understanding.
Despite progress, Mohammed still faces daily challenges. From requiring help with basic activities to managing health risks like blood pressure fluctuations, his journey is far from easy. The financial strain of adaptive equipment also highlights the need for more support systems.
Continuing to Inspire
Undeterred, Mohammed is now pursuing a doctorate in urban planning, building on his master’s degree. His journey is a testament to resilience and the power of purpose. Through his advocacy, he hopes to inspire others and ensure that people with disabilities have the resources and opportunities to thrive in society.
Mohammed Hasan Al-Mutawwa’s story is a shining example of overcoming adversity to create positive change for others. His efforts continue to raise awareness and empower individuals facing similar challenges, proving that resilience can turn even the toughest moments into opportunities for growth.
