Greenland’s Prime Minister has formally accused the United States of interference in the island nation’s internal affairs just days before a planned visit by senior US officials. National Security Adviser Mike Waltz and Usha Vance will travel to Greenland this week for high-level talks amidst rising geopolitical interest in the Arctic.
The PM condemned what he termed as Washington’s efforts to shape Greenland’s home policies and the management of resources. The relationship between Greenland’s leadership and America has remained strained as Greenland continues to become more strategic to world powers following its rare earth minerals and military strategic significance.
In spite of the biting words, the US delegation is still set to go on its visit, with a focus on security cooperation, economic partnerships, and Arctic sovereignty. Analysts report that the visit had the potential to either mitigate or worsen the existing rift between the two countries.
The diplomatic impasse underscores Greenland’s precarious balancing act in asserting independence while navigating relations with the world powers looking toward the rising profile of the Arctic.
