Dubai is set to become the world’s first city to launch an urban aerial taxi network, revolutionizing transportation with advanced air mobility. The facility is expected to handle 42,000 landings annually, serving 170,000 riders each year, with the launch scheduled for Q1 of 2026.

Aerial Taxi Service in Dubai: The Initial Phase

His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, has given the green light for the first aerial taxi vertiport near Dubai International Airport. This ambitious project will make Dubai the world leader in urban aerial transportation. The vertiport, designed to fit seamlessly into Dubai’s skyline, promises a modern, comfortable travel experience for passengers.

The facility will handle approximately 42,000 landings annually and serve up to 170,000 riders per year. It will operate from four locations initially: Dubai International Airport, Downtown Dubai, Dubai Marina, and Palm Jumeirah. For example, the aerial taxi journey from Dubai International Airport to Palm Jumeirah will take just 12 minutes, compared to 45 minutes by car.

Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed was briefed on the vertiport’s design, which reflects Dubai’s urban style and offers air-conditioned facilities built to global safety standards. The aircraft, operated by Joby Aviation, will be managed by experts in manufacturing, operations, and passenger movement.

Skyports is responsible for the vertiport infrastructure, and the RTA will oversee the governance and integration with Dubai’s broader transport system. The aerial taxi service will begin in Q1 2026.

The Joby S4 aerial taxi, capable of vertical take-off and landing, will be an eco-friendly, sustainable vehicle with zero emissions. Known for its safety, comfort, and speed, the aerial taxi features six rotors and four battery packs, allowing for a flight range of up to 161 kilometers at speeds of up to 321 km/h. With space for four passengers and a pilot, the aircraft will be quieter than traditional helicopters, enhancing the urban environment.

Connecting Dubai with Faster, Seamless Travel

In the initial phase, the aerial taxis will operate from four key locations close to Dubai International Airport, Downtown Dubai, Dubai Marina, and Palm Jumeirah. The service will provide residents and visitors with a fast, secure way to travel between major locations in Dubai. For instance, a ride from Dubai International Airport to Palm Jumeirah will take only 12 minutes instead of the typical 45-minute car journey. The service will also integrate with public transport, e-scooters, and bicycles, creating a smooth and multimodal transport experience across the city.

Earlier this year, the RTA signed an agreement with the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), Dubai Civil Aviation Authority (DCAA), Skyports Infrastructure, and Joby Aviation to kickstart the aerial taxi service. This collaboration sets the stage for Dubai’s pioneering role in aerial transportation, making the city a hub for advanced mobility solutions.
