Handcuffed Indian Student Pinned at US Airport Causes Global Outrage

A distressing video out of Newark Liberty International Airport on June 7 depicted an Indian student handcuffed, pinned to the ground, and clearly upset before being deported by the Port Authority Police. The video—posted by NRI businessman Kunal Jain on X—has once again sparked concern about the way international students are handled by U.S. immigration officials.

In the disturbing video, the student wails in Haryanvi, begging “I’m not crazy… they are hell‑bent to prove I am crazy,” as he is physically held back. Jain terms the incident “deeply inhumane” and a “human tragedy”—pointing to the psychological trauma caused to those seeking education overseas.

The viral video has also caused widespread indignation on social media and reactions among the Indian diaspora. The Consulate General of India in New York has confirmed active interaction with U.S. authorities to request clarification and action on behalf of the student.

This is amidst a spate of similar deportations of Indian students, with most explained as minor visa technicalities. Political and social activism groups and citizens are calling for urgent accountability, emphasizing foreign students should not be treated with criminal-style impunity without transparancy or proper legal safeguards.
