At Sagami-Koyokan High School in Zama, approximately 35 km south-west of Tokyo, a high school student sprayed insecticide in a hallway, sending more than 17 students and one teacher to the hospital. The CCTV footage of the incident, which happened just before 11 a.m. on June 30, led to an emergency reaction right away.

Speaking to NHK, school officials confirmed the student admitted spraying the substance as a “prank.” Those affected reported symptoms like dizziness and respiratory discomfort and were taken to hospital for toxicology testing. Fortunately, all individuals experienced only mild symptoms and are now in stable condition .

The male student, thought to be in his last year, was swiftly taken into jail by local police. The nature of the material and whether it contains dangerous compounds other than typical household insecticides are being looked into by authorities.

Concern regarding school safety procedures and the ease with which potentially dangerous materials can be introduced into classrooms has increased as a result of the occurrence. To avoid future occurrences of this kind, officials pointed out that more stringent oversight and awareness-raising initiatives might be required.
