India has officially submitted a bid to host the 2036 Olympics and Paralympics.
On October 1, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) sent a ‘Letter of Intent’ to the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) Future Host Commission, indicating India’s desire to host the Games in 2036, as reported by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
India concluded its participation in the recent Paris Olympics with a total of six medals, which included five bronze and one silver.
Earlier in September, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that India is making every effort to secure the hosting rights for the 2036 Olympic Games.
While addressing the Indian community at Nassau Coliseum in New York, Modi mentioned that the Summer Olympics will indeed take place in India.
The IOA’s letter of intent is a crucial step towards fulfilling India’s goal of hosting this major international sporting event. By submitting the letter to the IOC’s Future Host Commission, the process has advanced from ‘Informal Dialogue’ to ‘Continuous Dialogue’. This next phase involves a ‘Feasibility Assessment’ to review the progress of projects related to the Games in the prospective host country.
Ahmedabad is anticipated to be the main host city, with the Narendra Modi Stadium, the largest stadium globally with a capacity of 132,000, likely serving as a venue. Delhi is also under consideration as a potential host city.
India’s bid will compete against several other nations, including Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Hungary, Indonesia, and Qatar. The IOC is expected to announce the host city following its elections next year.
Prime Minister Modi has expressed strong confidence in India’s capability to host the Games, asserting that by 2036, the country will be one of the leading economic powers and will have a substantial middle class. He highlighted that hosting the Olympics would yield significant advantages, promoting economic growth, social development, and youth empowerment throughout the nation.
