India has been ranked as the world leader in artificial intelligence (AI) skill penetration, a report published by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in 2025 states. The report is pointing out the significant achievement India has made in developing an AI-skilled highly competent workforce surpassing other major economies in the density of talents and expertise specialization. This has been attributed to the country’s strategic investment in education, reskilling, and digital infrastructure.
The vibrant tech ecosystem—backed by over 5 million software engineers—has paved the way for India’s dominance in AI as well. Startups, IT behemoths, and universities have partnered to provide leading-edge training courses, certifications, and research activities. Government schemes such as Digital India and Skill India have also significantly contributed towards fuelling AI adoption and literacy across industries.
The UNDP report attributes India’s youth and diverse population for its flexibility in embracing AI technologies. Across healthcare and agriculture, finance and transport, AI applications are being increasingly integrated, leading to efficiency and innovation. The extensive use of machine learning, natural language processing, and data analytics is also creating new opportunities for jobs and entrepreneurship.
With international demand for AI skills growing, India is likely to be one of the biggest exporters of AI skills. According to the report, with increased investment and policy support, the nation is on track to emerge as the global AI innovation hub. The development is not just transforming India’s digital economy but also cementing its position on the future of global technology.
