Former Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh, passed away on Thursday at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi. He was 92 years old.
Known as the architect of India’s pivotal economic reforms, Dr. Singh had been undergoing treatment for age-related ailments. “Despite all efforts, he could not be revived and was declared dead at 9:51 PM,” a statement from AIIMS confirmed.
Tributes Pour In
Leaders from across the political spectrum paid heartfelt tributes to the Congress veteran.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the nation in mourning, stating, “India mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished leaders.” In a tweet, he highlighted Dr. Singh’s journey from humble beginnings to becoming a respected economist and policymaker. “As Prime Minister, he made great efforts to improve the lives of millions,” Modi wrote.
Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi described Dr. Singh as an inspiration for his honesty and commitment to serving the nation. “He was wise, strong-willed, and courageous, remaining dignified and gentle in the rough world of politics,” she shared in a heartfelt tweet.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also expressed deep sorrow. “Manmohan Singh Ji led India with immense wisdom and integrity. I have lost a mentor and guide,” he wrote, adding that millions would remember him with pride.
Former Congress minister Salman Khurshid called Dr. Singh’s contributions to the nation unparalleled, saying his dedication to public service would always be remembered.
Congress leader Sachin Pilot reflected on his time working with Dr. Singh, describing him as “the quintessential gentleman kind, humble, and visionary.”
Dr. Singh will be remembered not only as an economist and a leader but also as a man of unparalleled dignity who shaped modern India.
