Investigation Started After Indian News Anchor Swetcha Votarkar Was Found Dead in Suspected Suicide
According to authorities, the 40-year-old journalist was found dangling from a ceiling fan.
India’s Nagpur, June 30, 2025 Local police reported on Saturday that Swetcha Votarkar, a well-known Indian news anchor, was 40 years old when she was discovered dead at her Nagpur home. Authorities believe she committed suicide.
In the early hours of the morning, the experienced journalist’s domestic helper found her dead hanging from a ceiling fan. Police have filed a case of unnatural death and begun a preliminary investigation.
Reporters were told by Nagpur Police Department Inspector Anil Deshmukh that there were no indications of foul play or forced entry at the location. To rule out any other options, we are carrying out a thorough investigation.
Over her two-decade career, Votarkar had worked with a number of major regional and national news organisations and was renowned for her incisive reporting and fluent on-air persona. She was characterised by her colleagues as “professional, passionate, and deeply committed to journalism.”
Authorities took her laptop and cell phone for forensic analysis even though they said they did not find a suicide note at the scene. Statements are also being gathered from friends, family, and coworkers to see whether any potential mental health conditions, pressures, or interpersonal problems contributed to her premature death.
Her untimely death has shocked the journalism community, and tributes are flying on social media. In demanding professions like journalism, many called for increased support and mental health education.
Police asked the public and media outlets to refrain from speculating and to respect the bereaved family’s privacy while investigations are ongoing.
